PAPUA NEW GUINEA POSTCARDS 1
- The images on this Web site were taken in 1928
in some remote pockets of
- Papua New Guinea which had not then been
influenced by western civilization.
- The images reflect a society that had not
changed for thousands of years.

- Skulls are much used in the arts and
rites of New Guinea tribes. Not
- only the bones of enemies but also
those of deceased relatives are
- employed for many purposes. Among some
tribes a widow wears her
- departed husband's thigh bones as a
collar around the neck or as
- "panniers" about the waist. This skull
was mounted on a post
- in a pathway at Miwa.

- Twenty miles from Port Moresby, over
was then the only stretch of improved road in all of
- Papua New Guinea is the traveller
beaches Rona Falls. The main leap of this impressive
- cataract of the Laloki River is from
80 to 90 feet. While in hydroelectric possibilities are
- considerable, there is no prospect of
its early development, for the largest city in

only 300 white inhabitants
