HISTORICAL FIJI 4

The following are a collection of interesting historical images from Fiji.

An early image of Fiji

Government offices have been built since the establishment of a Crown colony
in Fiji, and though not an imposing structure, still the interior is quite complete,
and though the partitions are chiefly of reeds, the building is cool and comfortable.
The building is adjoining the present Government house, and is situated at Nasova,
1.5 miles from Levuka, upon the beach. The grounds are beautifully adorned with
the natural plants and flowers of the Fiji Islands, and the whole appearance of the
place about is one of comfort.

Government House, Fiji. The child seated upon the pony, and attended by
the native servant, is the little son of the then Governor, Mr. Devereaux,
a worthy and respected gentleman, who was appointed to act in that capacity
in the absence of Sir Arthur Gordon, while visiting England and Scotland.

The Devil's Tooth-pick is situated at the back of the native town of Toko,
at a distance of about two miles from the beach. It is said, by reliable and
old Fijians, that it was formally the custom of the native chiefs to take
their criminals to the summit of this peak, a height of 200 feet, and dash
them to the  ground below, those who, through a miracle escaped being
killed, were allowed to live.

The native town of Toko is three and half miles south of Levuka and is
beautifully situated as shown in this photograph. There is little history
connected with this place to make it remarkable above other
picturesque native towns in Fiji.
